Did I accomplish my goals?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Two months and a week ago I wrote up some goals to be accomplished.  I feel that I got most of them done in some way, shape or form.  Goals are in bold, my response to them is in regular text.

1. Make a portfolio of art that will get me accepeted into another college.

Sadly this did not happen the way I wanted it to.  I created a portfolio of photography, drawings, and digital art to submit to Rochester Institute of Technology, and they just didn’t like it.  So I really didn’t accomplish the portfolio or art bit.  But my academic portfolio, on the other hand, was good enough to get me into another college besides RIT.  You win some and lose some.  Besides, I am not even sure that I really want to go to school for New Media or Digital Media now, and am currently listed, at my latest school, in a business major.

2. Read three more books about investing/business.  Read as many books as I want for pleasure.

I got through the investing and business books. I read Rich Dad Cashflow Quadrant, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and The ABC’s of Real Estate Investing.  For pleasure, I finished Abhorsen and started the Great Gatsby again.

3. Put another 30 hours into drawing to improve my skills.

I am not sure if I got this accomplished or not–I would imagine I did because of class and the homework for class.  I definitely came out a better drawer than I went in.

4. Do another 10 photoshop tutorials.

I broadened this goal myself to include Illustrator as well as Photoshop.  Then I went and began a three hour, twice a week class on Illustrator.  Which I think counts towards my tutorials.

5. Read more about / do more web layout.

I created a layout for my site which I then hated and replaced with the older one.  I also created a layout for a nonprofit group.

6. Design a new layout for my site.

Did, hated it, replaced it.

7. Get a job???  If it is possible — but honestly I am learning so much with out one right now.

Still doing odd jobs.  I am in the workings for a part time job after Labor Day.

8. Do more work on my car in order to learn more.

I haven’t really completed this goal.  I have learned some things about cars since I went shopping for used cars.  And I still have not been able to find one for purchase. Ugh.

9. Take a trip to Philadelphia and Baltimore.  Not on the same weekend like last week.

Well I made it into Baltimore to see the Arts Festival that they had going on.  It was very commercialized, everyone was selling their art instead of displaying it well.  Even the stuff that was on display felt sort of cliche.

I did not make it to Philadelphia in this time mainly do to lack of money and reason.  I plan to go in the next week or so.

Those were the goals that mattered.  I should really set some new goals in the next day or so, but right now my only goal is to play some Source for a few minutes before getting back to reading and breakfast or something of the sort.

What have I been doing? Revisited

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Five days shy of a month ago, I posted some goals.  To keep on track, I am going to make myself accountable to you.  Here are the goals (reposted)–I put a two month time limit on them–and what I have accomplished.

1. Make a portfolio of art that will get me accepeted into another college.

I submitted my portfolio to RIT on the 6th, it went into evaluation on the 9th.  I talked to an advisor today, she said I will know in a week or two.

2. Read three more books about investing/business.  Read as many books as I want for pleasure.

I have completed one book on business by Robert Kiyosaki and am now reading a book by Ken McElroy on investing in Real Estate.  For pleasure, I have read Lirael, the book after Sabriel in a trilogy by Garth Nix.  I started Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood last evening.
3. Put another 30 hours into drawing to improve my skills.

Between the homework and out of class projects, I think I have racked up 30 hours.  I lose incentive when I don’t have to do it for a grade.
4. Do another 10 photoshop tutorials.

I am suffering in this category, I have only done one tutorial.
5. Read more about / do more web layout.

I was investigating MooTools for my new site design, I however, don’t know enough about javascript. I should learn more and am trying to convince myself that I feel like it.
6. Design a new layout for my site.

I really wish I could get MooTools to work, then I would have a lot of incentive. I have been messing around with ColourLovers.com to get possible color schemes.
7. Get a job???  If it is possible — but honestly I am learning so much with out one right now.

I don’t have a job yet, I am mowing my friends lawn and working for an old lady part time.
8. Do more work on my car in order to learn more.

Besides checking tire pressures and making sure my tires are tight, I have not yet done any work on my car.  I do think more oil will be necessary soon, but that isn’t really hard.
9. Take a trip to Philadelphia and Baltimore.  Not on the same weekend like last week.

I took a trip to Baltimore on Sunday with my friends Josh and Kenny.  We saw the Orioles play the Pirates, although we left early and spent little time in Baltimore outside the stadium.  I wish I could have wandered around more.  I am not even sure who won the game?  Anyone know?
10. Cook dinner for my parents once a week to help out.

Sadly lacking on this one, does picking up takeout count?
11. Run errand with my grandmothers.

I am completing this one a bit one sided, but I still have time.  I did wash my one grandmothers car and take the other out for some errands and lunch.

In my studies this summer, I have been trying to stay motivated.  I would just like to say thanks to Adam Hake for the motivation he gives me to learn.  I know I haven’t talked to him in person for almost a year, but when we were in school together he was always studying something on his own–because he was curious.  So thanks for the inspiration to learn, I aspire to your study habbits and inquisitive nature.

What have I been doing?

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Two months ago I went on leave of absence from school to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and work on getting there.

In the past two months I have:

1. Learned how to pay bills online.
2. Enrolled myself in a drawing class.
3. Set up a website with Host Gator.
4. Went through part of a web tutorial on NETTUT’s.
5. Went through several photoshop tutorials on Abduzeedo and PSDTUT’s.
6. Updated WordPress.
7. Written many post.
8. Replaced the exhaust pipe, spark plugs, adjusted intake and exhaust valve variances, and replaced an air filter on my car (with some help from my dad).
9. Did tons of paper work to try and get into schools and keep myself their when I get back from LOA.
10. Read two books: Sabriel and Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing.
11. Applied for 15 jobs that have yielded no jobs. And inquired about 10 more.
12. Taken my grandmothers shopping and ran errands for them.
13. Mowed my lawn 5 times or so.
14. Been on countless trips to the grocery store.

That’s what I have been doing.  Here are my goals for the next two months:

1. Make a portfolio of art that will get me accepeted into another college.
2. Read three more books about investing/business.  Read as many books as I want for pleasure.
3. Put another 30 hours into drawing to improve my skills.
4. Do another 10 photoshop tutorials.
5. Read more about / do more web layout.
6. Design a new layout for my site.
7. Get a job???  If it is possible — but honestly I am learning so much with out one right now.
8. Do more work on my car in order to learn more.
9. Take a trip to Philadelphia and Baltimore.  Not on the same weekend like last week.
10. Cook dinner for my parents once a week to help out.
11. Run errand with my grandmothers.
12. Go to the grocery store countless times.

That seems like a list that I can accomplish realistically.  Any suggestions?
